Even the most devoted and skilled physician learns early in training that we cannot cure every patient. That lesson takes on a whole new meaning when the patient is the doctor’s relative or friend. It reminds us of the old adage to “not sweat the small stuff” because life is short and precious. While being strong and providing hope are important, sometimes letting go of the tears with your loved one is the best medicine.
