Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the GI tract with two forms. Ulcerative colitis is usually limited to inflammation in the lining of the colon, whereas Crohn’s Disease can affect any part of the GI tract from mouth to rectum. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which has a normal lining in the colon, but causes symptoms related to bowel spasms. Though IBS can include bothersome symptoms, it does not increase the risk for colorectal cancer, but some forms of IBD can.
