Inflammatory bowel disease appears in two forms. Last week, we discussed ulcerative colitis, which usually affects the colon. This week, our focus is on Crohn’s Disease, which can impact any part of the GI tract, resulting in a wide variety of symptoms.
Crohn’s Disease can also affect the eyes, skin, liver, and joints and may increase the risk of kidney stones and blood clots. In some cases, there may also be an increased risk of lymphoma or colorectal cancer. The good news is that several forms of therapy are available to help control symptoms and reduce the severity of the disease.

This week, our topic is Crohn’s Disease, and Dr. Franz Goldstein was a champion in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. He lost his entire family in war-torn Germany and came to America alone in 1947. Grateful for his new start, he devoted his life to the art of healing, distinguishing himself as a world-class gastroenterologist and a highly respected expert in inflammatory bowel disease.
He was admired by patients and colleagues alike as brilliant and refined, but most importantly, he was humble.
Each week, we highlight the Real Champions in your life! Your family, friends, or colleagues who go the extra mile to help others in their community.
