Tune in on Saturday, August 20, 2022, with host Dr. Marianne Ritchie to learn about the revolution in cancer treatment.
The Revolution in Cancer Treatment – Emily Whitehead was 5 years old when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, the most common cancer in children. When the usual chemotherapy did not keep her cancer in remission, doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia offered her a newly developing therapy that would use her own immune system to fight the cancer. She was the first child in the world to receive the therapy and is now at age 17, is celebrating her 10th year of being cancer-free!
At the age of 5, Emily Whitehead was diagnosed with ALL, the most common childhood cancer. When two courses of chemotherapy did not clear the cancer, doctors at the local hospital told her parents to call hospice and take her home. It was her father Tom, who wouldn’t give up. With his wife Kari, they brought Emily to CHOP at the exact moment when a new treatment was being studied. Through an absolute miracle, the treatment worked and Emily just celebrated her 10th year of being cancer-free.
