Pat Dailey served as an officer in the Marines. Every year he joins his thousands of fellow Marines in South Philadelphia on November 10 to celebrate the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. The landing point is Tankie’s, a bar that can only hold a small number, so the crowds fill several blocks of Oregon Avenue.
Nine years ago, Pat Dailey followed a dream to recreate the Tun Tavern, the colonial pub that served as the birthplace of the Marines and the U.S. Navy, as well as a meeting place for four nonprofit organizations that began in the 1700s and still exist today. Others had tried, but Pat’s Marine training taught him to “Try harder.”
The goal is to rebuild The Tun™ by 2025 for the 250th birthday of the Marines. The Tun will stand as a reminder of the rich US history that began here in Philadelphia and the proceeds will benefit veterans’ causes and scholarships.
