Rosie the Riveter was not one woman in particular, but the iconic figure who represented over six million women who joined the U.S. workforce during World War II to replace the men who were called to defend our nation. One of those women is Mae Krier and over 50 years ago, she began a crusade to bring recognition to all the Rosies who joined the fight against Hitler, working in factories and on assembly lines building fighter jets and munitions. Finally, in 2017 her work led to marking March 21 as Rosie the Riveter Day, and on April 10 of this year, over two dozen Rosies gathered in Washington DC as Mae Krier accepted the Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of all Rosies. At age 98, she just spent the last week in Normandy for the 80th anniversary and claims that her work still isn’t finished. Next? A Rosie statue at the World War II Memorial.
