The Heartbreak of Psoriasis – Words from a TV commercial more than 50 years ago still describe the discomfort and embarrassment patients suffer. The good news? There is an entire […]

Every August, parents rush to have their children’s forms completed to begin the school year, especially if they include the pre-participation exam for sports. Sports aside, at some point during the year, all adolescents and teens should have an annual visit so the pediatrician can perform a complete history and physical to look for medical problems, and include “private time” to screen the young patient for risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, smoking/vaping, sexual activity, and STI’s. It’s also a good time to encourage the patient to seek advice from parents or some other caring adult, and not rely on a friend or the internet.

Medical Director,
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Primary Care, Newtown, PA
Founding member
Mattel’s Medical and Scientific Safety Council

David M Mannino, III, MD FCCP FERS
Professor, University of Kentucky
Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder, COPD Foundation
The first patient Dr. David Mannino saw in his days as a medical student was a smoker who was overwhelmed by severe lung disease. It left a lasting impression on the bright young man and inspired him to become a pulmonary specialist, so he could study the effects of tobacco on the lungs, as well as second-hand smoke, pollution, and treat patients in the critical care unit. His dedication led to a landmark study that showed cigarette smoking can lead to erectile dysfunction. His quest to educate the public helped to shape current guidelines such as updated warnings on cigarette packaging and legislating smoke-free zones. The work of this one man has saved millions of lives. One man really can make a difference!
