Most people realize that smoking cigarettes can increase the risk of heart and lung disease as well as multiple cancers. Like any other habit, the path to quitting smoking takes time and commitment. The extra difficulty is nicotine’s addictive qualities, which can cause a chemical dependence. As physicians, we can’t just counsel patients and say, “Stop smoking because it can be harmful to your health.” Smoking cessation is a process that requires guidance and support. Dr. Frank Leone explains the reasons why people smoke, and the process of smoking cessation and outlines the great resources available at Penn Medicine.
